Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia, will be observed on Friday, April 15, 2011. As a result, the deadline to file your personal income tax return has been moved to Monday, April 18, 2011. Often, taxpayers find they cannot file their personal tax returns by the deadline. The cause could be due to missing information, late arriving investment data or the more common reason, "I just didn't get around to it".
The government allows for an automatic six month extension of time to file, bringing the new filing date to October 15th. To obtain this extension of time to file, you must file Form 4868 by April 18.
